A single-engine, experimental aircraft crashed Monday in southern Poway, killing the 62-year-old pilot, authorities said.
The plane was doing acrobatics near an industrial park off Community Road, just south of Poway Road, when it caught a wheel on a barren mesa about 5:30 p.m. and skittered across the ground, said Cathleen Orchard, an engineer with the Poway Fire Department.
Federal Aviation Administration officials identified the plane as a Parrigan RV-4. It broke apart as it tumbled, though the fuselage was found intact, authorities said.
The name of the pilot was not immediately available. The FAA is investigating the crash, said Tom Aina, the agency’s duty officer.
