The Plight of Young Black Males in America

Your editorials on the future of blacks in America (Sept. 2-4) failed to mention the single biggest threat to young black men.

For every black man who goes to college, three will go to prison. William Bennett tells us that we cannot afford to provide more money for education, but we can afford to send half a generation to the college of crime. The majority of the black drug offenders are nonviolent and do not need to be in jail.

The black community must demand an end to the use of jail as a solution to drugs. They must demand solutions such as education, jobs, and health care, which build rather than destroy. Unless this misguided “War on Drugs” is stopped, nothing will save the next black generation.
