Marcus Falkner Cunliffe; Expert on U.S. History
Marcus Falkner Cunliffe, 68, a historian and commentator best known for his 1958 biography of the nation’s first President, “George Washington: Man and Monument.” A native of Great Britain, Cunliffe was educated at Oxford and Manchester. He became an expert on U.S. history, and during his long career wrote or edited more than 15 books on American history and literature. For the last 10 years, Cunliffe was a professor at George Washington University. On Sunday in Washington after an extended illness.
