Battle of Britain Hoopla Draws Dornan, Vets

WASHINGTON — Never a shrinking violet when it comes to air power, Rep. Robert K. Dornan is leading a sortie of a different sort to England this weekend.
The Garden Grove Republican, who spent six years as a peacetime Air Force fighter pilot, is President Bush’s official representative at the biennial Farnborough air show outside of London, which began Friday and will run five more days.
Instead of assembling an entourage of boondoggling congressmen, however, Dornan loaded an Air Force transport plane with 15 veterans of the World War II air war over Europe.
The vets, some in their 80s, will be on hand for ceremonies commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Among the war heroes along for the ride is Walker Mahurin of Newport Beach, who shot down more than 20 enemy planes over Europe, Dornan said.
