Lithuanian basketball center Arvidas Sabonis, who led the Soviet Union to its upset of the United States in the 1988 Olympic Games, met with Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee, in Lausanne, Switzerland to discuss gaining athletic independence from the USSR.

Samaranch received delegations from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Other Lithuanian stars include Soviet mainstays Sarunas Marculionis, now with the Golden State Warriors, Rinas Kurtinaitis and Valdemaras Khomichius.

Lithuania has declared independence from the Soviet Union, and Latvia and Estonia say they will do so.
