UPS Awarded Cargo Route to Japan: The U.S. Transportation Department selected United Parcel Service Co. to operate a new all-cargo route to Japan. Emery Worldwide Airlines was awarded backup authority. The new route was authorized in an agreement last year between Japan and the United States calling for a substantial expansion of air service between the two countries. UPS spokesman Ken Sternad said the company, which plans to operate six flights a week, had not yet placed a value on the route.
