Tentative Merger Announced: Nichols Institute, a San Juan Capistrano-based medical laboratory chain, said Thursday that it has agreed tentatively to merge with MAWD Medical Laboratories in Kansas City, Mo. The deal calls for Nichols to pay $1.75 million in cash, make future payments with a present value of $2 million and issue a new class of preferred stock convertible to about 111,000 shares of Nichols common stock to MAWD, a diagnostic laboratory firm.
