NATION : Mail to Iraq and Kuwait Halted

WASHINGTON — Mail service to Iraq and Kuwait has been suspended, the U.S. Postal Service announced today.
Mail service was halted because of transportation problems in reaching the two countries since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, officials said.
Until further notice, all international mail destined for the two countries will be returned to the sender marked “Service Temporarily Suspended,” postal officials said.
People who receive returned mail can apply for a refund of postage.
Mail service to military personnel deployed in Saudi Arabia and mail to other areas of the Middle East continues as normal.
To date, postal officials say, they have moved 110,000 pounds of cards and letters to service personnel in the region. That would amount to about 1.5 million cards and letters.
