WORLD IN BRIEF : ROMANIA : Protesters Defy Ban on Demonstrations

Authorities banned demonstrations in central Bucharest, Romania, after six days of sometimes violent anti-government rallies. But about 100 demonstrators gathered in central University Square, continuing rallies against President Ion Iliescu. Protesters have accused Iliescu and his associates of continuing the policies of Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, who was overthrown and executed. The recent rallies, however, appear to be motivated by the deteriorating economy.
