Layoffs at Universal Studios Florida: About 250 employees, 7% of the work force, were laid off at the theme park in Orlando after a trouble-plagued opening summer in which several attractions failed to function. Universal said most of the layoffs were the result of an “end of summer adjustment,†though an unspecified number of those who were cut were not part of the summer staff. Attendance at the $630-million park has been lower than expected after several key rides, including “Jaws†and “Kongfrontation,†experienced chronic mechanical problems.
