How Much Is Enough?
This letter is in regard to Cathy Curtis’ article on the Laguna Beach sculpture competition (“Can Laguna Beach Commission a Worthy Sculpture for $27,000?†Aug. 20).
In her opinion, $27,000 is not enough to commission a piece of public art for the city of Laguna Beach.
How much is enough? If the Council decides to choose a “fledgling artist,†more power to them. Is Curtis now a part of the “Blue Chip†art corruption in America that only requires larger and larger sums of money for artwork?
I agree with Curtis that it was foolish of her to become a member of the Selection Committee. She has done a disservice to the L.A. Times and also to the efforts of the city of Laguna Beach to provide some cost-effective art and culture to their residents.
Curtis: If $27,000 is not enough, why don’t you sponsor a car wash, or a raffle, or a fund-raising dinner, or maybe we could do a show. . . .
