CHINATOWN
If you intend to see “The Two Jakes,” the sequel to the 1974 landmark film “Chinatown,” you better brush up on the original, a quintessential private-eye yarn about love and murder provoked by an idealist posing as a cynic, whose curiosity uncovers the truth and destroys that which he most wants to protect. With Jack Nicholson (pictured), Faye Dunaway and John Huston. Superbly written (by Robert Towne) and directed (by Roman Polanski).
(Showtime Friday at 1:35 a.m.)
