Dr. Jerry Schwartz has been named medical director of neonatology for Torrance Memorial Medical Center. He was previously at Tarzana Regional Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where he was part of a team managing infant apnea (temporary stopping of breathing) and infant home monitoring programs.
Thirteen college-bound seniors from South Bay high schools have been awarded scholarships by the Sandpipers, a women’s philanthropic organization. They are John Andrews, Christine Soto and Scott Powell of Redondo Union High School; Kyra Smith of South Torrance High; Maureen Skeehan of Bishop Montgomery; Crystal Reul of Miraleste; Trevor Lattin of Rolling Hills; Nesha Burghardt, Allan Grant Jenman III, Megan Hayes and David Kueneman of Mira Costa; and Carrie Walters and Andrew Jacobsen of Palos Verdes.
Two South Bay high school graduates have received 1990 college scholarships of $2,400 each from the Watson Land Co. They are Lakiesha Worthen of Banning High School and Rommel Mojica of Carson High School. Worthen plans to study business administration at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Mojica plans to major in engineering at UCLA.
Lomita resident Ira L. Shafiroff has been appointed associate dean and dean of students at Southwestern University School of Law. A full professor of law, he will be responsible for academic counseling while continuing to teach. Shafiroff, a 1979 graduate of Southwestern, practiced tax and estate law before returning to the college in 1982.
James S. Hartman has been named dean of enrollment services at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Since 1978, Hartman was vice president for student affairs at Radford University in Virginia. Before that, he taught for 12 years at Ohio University.
Tommy Tomlinson of Northrop Corp. has received the U.S. Navy’s Reliability, Maintainability and Quality Assurance Award for leading a successful program to improve quality and safety on Northrop’s F/A-18 Hornet assembly line.
Debbie Stadler and Jonathan Eubanks have been named the outstanding young woman and man of 1990 by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce. Stadler is founder and project chairman of the South Bay Outstanding Young Educator program. She was also the first woman president of the Redondo Beach Jaycees. She is president of the South Bay Council of Parent Participatory Nursery Schools. Eubanks is business manager at Hughes Aircraft Co, preservation commissioner for Redondo Beach and a member of the city’s General Plan Advisory Committee. As president of the Redondo Beach Historical Society, he led efforts to restore the Morrell and Queen Anne houses.
Carrie King of South Torrance High School has received the Highland Federal Bank Director’s Memorial Scholarship Award. King maintained a 3.97 grade-point average and was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. She plans to attend Stanford this fall.
Dr. Dominic De Cristofaro of Rolling Hills Estates has been honored by the Harbor-UCLA chapter of the National Management Assn. for his years of volunteer service to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and its Research and Education Institute. De Cristofaro has been in private practice in cardiology in Long Beach since 1968 and is director of the cardiology department at St. Mary Medical Center.
