WORLD IN BRIEF : NICARAGUA : Key Air Force Commander Fired

An internal crisis erupted in the Nicaraguan military when the Sandinista Popular Army announced that air force chief Col. Javier Pichardo was fired, reportedly for revealing military secrets to Cristiana Chamorro, director of the pro-government newspaper La Prensa and daughter of President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro. The statement said armed forces commander Humberto Ortega had replaced him with Col. Manuel Salvatierra.
