Downzoning Ordered for 14-Block Stretch
An emergency 45-day order was issued by the Santa Monica City Council Tuesday downzoning from R-3 to R-2 the 14 blocks on Ocean Park Boulevard east from Lincoln Boulevard to 25th Street. The stretch had previously allowed three-story buildings. However, the area is made up mainly of one- and two-story residential units, prompting the council action.
Council members said they feared that larger developments would negatively affect the character of the neighborhood and pose a threat to the public health, safety and welfare of the residents.
All development applications deemed complete after July 10, 1990, will be limited to the standards for the R-2 Low Density Multi-Family Residential District.
