RESACA, Ga. — Two freight trains collided in northwest Georgia early today, killing three people and injuring four.
Authorities said a northbound freight ran head-on into another train that was traveling onto the main Norfolk Southern track from a side track shortly before 3:30 a.m. in a rural area west of Resaca, about 60 miles north of Atlanta.
The engineer and conductor of the train on the main track and the conductor of the other train were killed, said Norfolk Southern spokesman Bob Auman.
Four other railroad employees were taken to Gordon County Hospital in Calhoun with bruises.
Auman said both engines on one of the trains and one of the engines of the other train derailed and caught fire. In addition, at least 14 cars derailed, but none carried hazardous materials.
