Stripped: The “Doonesbury†comic strip by Garry Trudeau is not running this week in some newspapers. The character of J.J. is a performance artist who speaks provocatively while wearing nothing but a strategically draped rope and a bucket on her head. The editor of the Republic in Columbus, Ind., said: “If our photographers came back with something like that, we wouldn’t run it.†The strip won’t run in the Ft. Worth, Tex., Star-Telegram, either; the editor disapproves of the language.

Hair It Is: Madonna has hair that “makes your head turn†but Barbara Bush’s hair “makes your stomach turn,†according to an industry poll by the International Hair Color Exchange. The poll also praised the locks of Michelle Pfeiffer and Kimberly Foster but said Kathleen Sullivan and Roseanne Barr were washouts. Sylvester Stallone had the best men’s hair, followed by singer Michael Bolton. Boxing promoter Don King’s shocked locks were named the worst among men.

Just Say Poe: Christopher Eckard, a researcher at the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site in Philadelphia, says the famed author’s reputation as a drug fiend is undeserved. After poring over Poe’s papers, Eckard asserted: “The bottom line is that there is no hard evidence to back up any of Poe’s reputation†as an opium and morphine user.

Serving Simon: Breakfast in bed--cooked and served by a singing Carly Simon--was the big attraction at a celebrity auction Monday on Martha’s Vineyard. An auction spokeswoman said Simon “wanted to see the man who was bidding $8,500 for her song, and a woman in the back held up her infant son.†Other bids: $5,600 for a sailboat ride with Walter Cronkite and $1,600 for a visit to the set of “Sesame Street.â€
