Huber Advances to 4th Round
Ditta Huber of La Jolla was the only local player to advance to today’s fourth round of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Girls’ 16s national championships at Morley Field. Huber, who defeated Leigh Buchart of Lexington, Ky., 6-3, 6-2, in her third-round match Tuesday, will play Valerie Poulos of Boston.
Nikki Willette of San Diego lost to Sonya Olejar of Tacoma, Wash., 6-4, 6-3, and Lee Ann Rostovsky of La Jolla lost to Jean Okada of Lahaina, Hawaii, 6-2, 6-0.
BASKETBALL
Will Cunningham, who led Christian Heritage in career rebounds, steals and three-point field goals last year, was named the Hawks’ assistant basketball coach the school’s athletic director and head coach Swen Nater announced.
Cunningham, 22, joins the staff just after Ray Slagle announced his resignation as co-head coach.
SAILING
David Houser of Coronado is in second place after three races on the first day of the O’Day Finals to determine the U.S. single-handed sailing champion off Point Loma. Morgan Larson of Capitola leads with a score of 10.75 ahead of Houser who has 11.75. Rounding out the top three is Brian Keane of New Providence, N.J. (13).
BASEBALL
Lance Dickson, a former Grossmont High pitcher of La Mesa, was called up by the Chicago Cubs Tuesday from its Double-A team in Charlotte, N.C. and will start against the St. Louis Cardinals in Chicago Thursday.
DIVING
Julianne Bower, the 1990 San Diego Section diving champion from Bonita Vista High, finished fifth in the one-meter dive for girls 16-18 at the Junior Olympics national championships at Tempe. Bower is going to South Carolina on a scholarship in the fall.
