SHORT TAKES : Album Producer Wants a Break
NEW YORK — After producing albums by George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Randy Newman and the Traveling Wilburys, Jeff Lynne says he’s ready for a break.
“A lot of people have been asking me to produce their records,†Lynne said in a recent interview. “I had to say no to all of them for the moment. I haven’t really had a break for a couple of years.â€
Lynne, who established himself in the 1970s as leader of the Electric Light Orchestra, has also released a solo album, “Armchair Theatre,†and is working on a second Wilburys record, scheduled for release in the fall.
“I think working with all these other people has helped me a lot,†Lynne said of “Armchair Theatre.†“I feel much better about my voice. I left it dry and simple. Before, I would have covered it with echo and tried to hide behind that.â€
The first Wilburys’ album included Lynne, Harrison, Petty, Bob Dylan and Orbison, who died shortly after the record’s release. The new album will feature the four remaining members.
