Palm Springs Heat
Where did Sharon Apfelbaum find the cool desert evenings that she refers to in her fine article on Palm Springs in the Travel Section of July 22 (“Everybody Into the Water!â€)? When the temperature reaches 118 degrees or more during the day, the nights are comparably hot--80 to 90 degrees--even in the coolest early morning hours.
We live in the lower desert and spend time in the Palm Springs area each summer. When we were there last week, the hotel pool felt almost as warm as the heated spa at 9 p.m. The air trapped by the nearby mountains was very hot. Apfelbaum need only turn to the weather charts in The Times’ Metro Section to find a reading of midsummer desert temperatures. These official figures are usually cooler than the actual temperature.
