All-Star Teams to Play Chinese in Basketball

Two boys’ all-star squads and one girls’ all-star team will travel to Shanghai on Monday to play a series of basketball games against Chinese club teams.
La Canada, Bell-Jeff, Crescenta Valley, Burroughs, L.A. Baptist, North Hollywood, St. Bernard’s and Notre Dame highs will be represented by players on the three teams.
Doug Nicol of Bell-Jeff and Scott Hamilton of Notre Dame will coach the boys; Jim Couch of Bell-Jeff is the girls’ coach. The 10-day trip is sponsored by the International Sports Exchange.
Janae Lautenschlager of Northridge captured gold medals Friday and Saturday in the U.S. Diving Assn.’s Zone D Preliminary Diving Championships at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.
Lautenschlager, 20, who competes for Go Diving Team and Arizona State University, won the one-meter springboard and the three-meter springboard to advance to the national championships from Aug. 15-19 at Southern Methodist.
Other national qualifiers included UCLA sophomore Kristen Walls, Brian Earley of USC--who also won double gold--and UCLA’s Chris Dudka.
