James Coley scored on a 35-yard pass play and the Chicago Bear defense shut down the Cleveland Browns for a 13-0 victory in the Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibition game Saturday.

The Bears, coming off a 6-10 record last season that included a season-ending string of six losses, had 18 first downs while holding the Browns to 10 before a record-crowd of 23,952 at Canton, Ohio.

The Browns, 9-6-1 last season and 37-21 losers to Denver for the AFC title, did not move the ball past their 42 until the final minute.

After forcing a Cleveland punt on the game’s first possession, Chicago quarterback Jim Harbaugh completed two passes for 38 yards to set up a 31-yard field goal by Kevin Butler. Harbaugh completed six of eight passes for 97 yards, before leaving with a back bruise in the second quarter.

It stayed 3-0 until the third quarter, when a pass interference penalty and two completions by Tomczak for 19 yards moved the Bears to the Brown 35.

On first down, Tomczak completed a short pass to Coley, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound, second-year tight end from Clemson.
