In another development related to Steinbrenner, the prosecutor in Spira’s extortion trial asked baseball to delay its Steinbrenner investigation to avoid uncovering information that would help Spira in his defense, baseball’s lawyer said.
John Dowd, who advised Commissioner Fay Vincent in the Steinbrenner inquiry, is quoted in the New York Times as saying assistant U.â€. attorney Gregory Kehoe contacted him in April with the request.
Kehoe acknowledged asking for the delay, but he called claims that he sought to avoid helping Spira’s defense “pure nonsense.â€
Prosecutors are required to share any information necessary for the defense to make its case.
Spira is expected to be tried later in the year.
