Imperial Bank and Allied-Signal Aerospace Co. have presented pledges to donate $100,000 each over the next five years to the Torrance Memorial Health Care Foundation. The pledge presentations were made to Gordon Stiegler, foundation president, and Gary Steinhauer, director of fund development for Torrance Memorial Medical Center. The medical center is conducting a capital fund-raising campaign to support several major building projects on its 16-acre campus. These include a second cardiac catheterization laboratory, a 468-seat health conference center and an ambulatory care center.
Dr. Deborah Beach of Torrance is the new president of the Los Angeles County Chiropractic Society’s Southwest Society. Other South Bay chiropractic doctors serving on the board are Linda Yeh and Nicole Feldman of Torrance, Alan Jeans of San Pedro, Marc Weiss of Redondo Beach and Dennis Nowack of Manhattan Beach. The Southwest Society is one of 10 local chiropractic associations that make up the 700-member Los Angeles County Chiropractic Society.
Monique Swayzee of Westchester High School is the winner of a $500 student leadership award from the Rotary Club of Westchester. Orville Wright Junior High School students Elizabeth Reuter, Diana Munoz, Jennifer Spilansky, Shelly Tong and Ryan Song are winners of the annual Creative Contest Awards sponsored by the club. Each student received a check for $100. Projects submitted for the Creative Contest included essays, science projects and a graphic demonstration of karate, its use and development.
Dr. John K. Nylund has been elected president of the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club. Serving on his board of directors are Jay Harkenrider, Vince Okumura, Dr. Chris Ullman, Bill Becker, Fred Dover, Jim Orland, Dave Hornbecker and Edie Webber.
“Alaska’s Killer Whales,†a documentary by Robert Hooper, a Loyola Marymount University assistant professor of communication arts, earned a Silver Apple Award at the 1990 National Educational Film and Video Festival in Oakland. Hooper’s documentary competed against more than 1,100 other entries in the May 23 to June 3 festival. The film was also an official selection of the 1989 World Festival of the Sea in France. The film focuses on the problems man presents to the survival of the killer whales.
Former Torrance City Atty. Stanley E. Remelmeyer has been chosen by the American Red Cross, South Bay District, as Volunteer Citizen of the Year. Remelmeyer has been associated with the Red Cross for 50 years, ever since he completed the Red Cross first-aid course as a private in the U.S. Army. He has served on the board of directors, twice as chairman, was director of disaster services and for the past two years was general campaign chairman for the Red Cross community support campaign.
Dr. Amer El-Ahraf has been named executive vice president at California State University, Dominguez Hills. He will assume that position Oct. 1. El-Ahraf was previously acting vice president for academic affairs at Cal State San Bernardino. Before that, he was associate vice president of academic resources there and a professor of health science. A native of Egypt, El-Ahraf is the author of numerous books and scholarly articles and is a licensed veterinarian. He received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Cairo University and master’s and doctor’s degrees in public health from UCLA. He is also a graduate of the management development program at Harvard University.
Banning High School graduates Yvonne La Riva of Wilmington and Michele Wolfson of Long Beach and Carson High School graduate Lucinda Licauco of Carson are among six students selected as President’s Scholars at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Each will receive a scholarship of $1,500 a year for up to four years of undergraduate study at Dominguez Hills.
Elaine Floyd is the new president of Soroptimist International of Del Amo/Torrance. Floyd is a 14-year resident of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and is the owner of Berkeley Professional Publications, a newsletter production firm in Rolling Hills Estates. Other officers for the 1990-91 year are Mary McKane, Sheri Wilson, Dianne Freeman, Kathleen O’Rourke, Judy Grange, and Barbara Aranguren.
Annual scholarship awards were recently presented by Las Vecinas Women’s Club to three South High School students. Scott Davies received a four-year renewable scholarship of $500 a year. He will attend UC Berkeley, majoring in computer science. Tina Chang received a one-year $600 scholarship award. She will attend UCLA, majoring in economics and business. San Duong also received a $600 one-year award. She will attend UC Irvine, majoring in pharmacy.
