Songs and Violins Mark Stern’s 70th: A who’s who of classical musicians threw a 70th birthday party Sunday in San Francisco for Isaac Stern, as 30,000 people turned out to pay tribute to one of the world’s most famous violinists. Flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and violinist Jaime Laredo were among those who performed with the San Francisco Symphony in a free concert. Mstislav Rostropovich, the conductor of the National Symphony, stole the show, dancing onto the stage wearing the heavy makeup of a ballerina, a wig and white tutu.
