UC BOON: Following Irvine’s example, San Joaquin Valley communities are offering free land in hopes of getting a University of California campus (A1). . . . Twenty-five years ago, the Irvine Co. donated 1,000 acres to UC, figuring a campus would do for Irvine’s economy what UCLA had done for Westwood’s. . . . Expenditures by UCI, the county’s third largest employer, resulted in an economic impact of $820 million and creation of 7,000 new jobs in Orange County in 1988-1989, one study said.
