Joyner on 15-Day Disabled List, May Have Stress Fracture in Knee

Wally Joyner, the Angels’ first baseman, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a possible stress fracture of his right knee.

Joyner missed the past four games with what was thought to be tendinitis in the knee, but tests Monday indicated a more serious problem.

Joyner, on the disabled list for the first time in his five-season major league career, will be re-evaluated in 10 to 14 days by Dr. Lewis Yocum, the team orthopedist.

Joyner, 28, is batting .268 with eight home runs and 41 runs batted in, second on the team to Lance Parrish’s 44 RBIs.

It was the 10th time an Angel has been put on the DL this season, surpassing last season’s total of nine.

The Angels recalled outfielder Lee Stevens from triple-A Edmonton to replace Joyner, who was put on the DL retroactive to Thursday.

Stevens, a first-round pick in the 1986 June draft as a first baseman, was converted to an outfielder, but started at first and batted fifth against the Milwaukee Brewers in his major league debut. He went three for four with a double. In 90 games with Edmonton this season, he batted 293 with 16 home runs, 31 doubles and 66 RBIs.
