SMILE
This tart 1975 satire, written by Jerry Belson and directed by Michael Ritchie, was ahead of its time in its hilarious skewering of beauty contests, a favorite target of feminists. The contestants range from the naive to the opportunistic. The film stars Bruce Dern as an eager-beaver recreation dealer who is the contest’s principal promoter, with Barbara Feldon as its ferocious den mother. Filmed in Santa Rosa, which was not amused.
