A Santa Paula man who was arguing with his wife while driving was killed Saturday when his truck crashed into a power pole on California 126, authorities said.

Richard Nino, 22, died of massive injuries after the truck skidded off the highway east of Todd Road, the California Highway Patrol said. Two passengers survived with only minor injuries.

Nino’s wife, Yvonne Nino, 20, of Ventura, was taken to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital where she was treated for back injuries and released, a nursing supervisor said. Jackie Mora, 20, of Santa Paula suffered only minor injuries and was not treated.

CHP officials said Nino was traveling 80 to 90 m.p.h. when he suddenly slammed on his brakes and lost control of the truck.

Yvonne Nino told officers that Nino and she were involved in a heated argument before the accident. The two women had pleaded with Nino to slow down.
