Engineer Escapes as Cal State Long Beach Roof Collapses
The roof of a Cal State Long Beach music building collapsed and the walls buckled today, but nobody was believed to have been hurt.
An engineer checking the building narrowly escaped the 11:36 a.m. collapse, and rescuers with specially trained dogs were searching the rubble to see if anyone was trapped, said Fire Capt. Brad Wilson.
“We’re 99.9% sure nobody was in there,†Wilson said. “But we called in (search dogs) just to be sure.â€
It was not immediately known why the roof collapsed.
Stress fractures had been found earlier in the day, and an engineer was called to check the building.
“He was in the attic and apparently heard some creaking and got out of there pretty quick,†Wilson said.
The roof’s collapse pushed out the walls, and nearby structures were threatened.
