NATION IN BRIEF : TEXAS : High Court Declines to Free Reporter
A San Antonio television reporter remained in jail after the U.S. Supreme Court denied his request for a stay. State District Judge Pat Priest had ordered Brian Karem to turn over his notes of an interview in a murder case or serve six months in jail and pay a $500 fine for contempt of court. Karem refused and turned himself in to Bexar County deputies and began serving his sentence last Wednesday. He appealed, but the high court denied without comment his request for stay. At issue is who arranged the jail talk with murder suspect Henry David Hernandez.
