Wimbledon tennis, World Cup soccer quarterfinals and major tournaments on both the seniors and women’s golf circuit top the weekend sports television viewing choices.
Wimbledon’s upset-filled first week ends today with Channels 4 and 36 providing coverage at noon, and Channel 39 at 11 a.m. First-week highlights will air at 1 p.m. Sunday on Channels 4, 36 and 39.
The World Cup’s final four will be set by Sunday afternoon. In today’s quarterfinals, Argentina meets Yugoslavia (7:55 a.m. TNT, 8 a.m. Channel 34) and Ireland faces Italy (11:55 a.m. TNT, noon Channel 34). Sunday’s quarterfinals match Czechoslovakia and West Germany (7:55 a.m. TNT, 8 a.m. Channel 34). Cameroon and England meet in the second quarterfinal (11:55 a.m. TNT, noon Channel 34).
Jack Nicklaus, winner of two of three senior tournaments he has entered in this, his rookie year on the 50-and-over circuit, continues his quest for his first USGA Senior Open title with third-round action today (11 a.m. Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42). Coverage of Sunday’s final round begins at 12:30 p.m. on the same stations. The LPGA’s Du Maurier Classic airs at 1 p.m. today and Sunday on Prime Ticket. The PGA’s overshadowed Greater Hartford Open can be seen at 1 p.m. today and 12:30 p.m. Sunday on Channels 2 and 8.
