SHOOTING U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS : Haas, Meek Win Gold Medals

George Haas of Ontario and Bill Meek of Riverside won gold medals Saturday in the 30th U.S. International Shooting Championships at Chino.
Haas was in a three-way tie for second place in the trap shooting event--hitting 390 of 400 targets--heading into the final round. He outshot six other finalists, hitting 24 of 25 targets, to edge Billy Thompson of Milford, Del., by one target.
Meek held the lead throughout the smallbore free rifle prone competition, compiling 1,193 of a possible 1,200 points, including 103.5 of a possible 109.9 during the 10-shot final.
Ernie Vande Zande of Vancouver, Wash, finished second, 4.3 points behind Meek with an aggregate score of 1,292.2.
The competition also serves at the World Championship team tryouts for the U.S. national shooting team.
The championships run through June 29 at the Prado Tiero Range in Chino.
