Montana Is Said to Agree to Pact for $14 Million

NEW YORK — Joe Montana, who has quarterbacked the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl titles, has reached agreement on a contract extension that would pay him $4.5 million next season and about $14 million for four years, The National reported Friday.
The newspaper said Montana would become the highest-paid player in team sports, surpassing the $3.86 million per year of Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees. The National said the contract, which would include bonus payments, apparently has not been signed.
Montana made a base salary of $1.2 million last season, and without a contract extension, he would earn $2.55 million per year the next three years.
According to The National, the contract provides for decreasing earnings, scaling down to $4 million in 1991, $3.5 million in 1992 and $2.5 million in 1993.
