DIGEST : Cleveland Pair Reaches Semifinals of City Section Tennis Championships
Twins Nam and Long Nguyen of Cleveland High advanced to the doubles semifinals of the City Section tennis championships, which will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Racquet Centre of Universal City.
The Nguyens will face Lucas Goldstein and Sung Kim of University.
Kennedy’s Josh Etting and Che Naveja will play Ardy Ghaffari and Jon Faller of Palisades.
Three area junior college baseball players have signed letters of intent to play for UC Riverside. All will receive partial athletic scholarships.
Vince Simili, a freshman shortstop for Pierce College, said he has signed with Riverside. Simili, a Chatsworth High graduate, had five doubles and two triples for Pierce.
Steve Lasagna and Jim Estes, sophomore teammates at Antelope Valley College, also have signed with Riverside, Antelope Valley Coach Frank Blua said. Estes, a center fielder, and Lasagna, a catcher, were All-Foothill Conference selections.
Both attended Antelope Valley High.
The Ventura County East/West All-Star football game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on June 16 at Thousand Oaks High.
Among those competing will be Times Ventura County Back of the Year Tim Gutierrez of Santa Clara, who will play for the West, and Lineman of the Year Lance Martin of Thousand Oaks, who will play for the East.
Eli Contreras, a junior from Canyon High, was named the Golden League Player of the Year in volleyball.
Contreras was joined by three Canyon teammates--Troy Aldrich, Rick Phillips and Kevin Sather--on the 12-player first team.
Heather Lonsberry, a Saugus High senior, was named the Golden League Player of the Year in softball.
Three other Saugus players--Brandy Rico, Amanda Colvin and Kerry Coudry--were chosen for the first team.
