THE WASHINGTON SUMMIT : Gorbachevs Are Hosts for Bushes
WASHINGTON — Mikhail S. Gorbachev raised his glass to his summit partner George Bush Friday night, declaring that progress achieved to date resulted in large part from the relationship the two leaders have built.
In a warm official toast at a dinner in Bush’s honor, Gorbachev hailed the day’s achievements, which capped the second of four days of superpower talks.
“The package of our new agreements also reflects the special role the Soviet Union and the United States play in building bridges of understanding and trust between the East and the West,†he said.
Barbara Bush was clad in a striking fuchsia cocktail dress and Raisa Gorbachev in black velvet.
Dinner, a sevruga fish and roast suckling pig, was served after the toasts and apparently minus the traditional Russian caviar.
