SOUTHERN SECTION BASEBALL FINALS : Small Schools, 1-A Start Two-Day Championships

The Southern Section baseball championships will begin today with the title games for Small Schools and the 1-A Division at Blair Field in Long Beach.

The four other divisional finals will be played Saturday at Anaheim Stadium, beginning at 10 a.m.

In today’s first game, Boron (22-4) meets Rosamond (24-2) at 4:30 p.m. for the Small Schools title. Boron defeated Pasadena Poly, 20-10, and Rosamond beat Norwalk Leffingwell Christian, 7-2, in the semifinals. In the 1-A Division final at 7:30 p.m., Van Nuys Montclair Prep (24-3) faces Sun Valley Village Christian (18-6).

Saturday, in the 5-A Division final, Huntington Beach Marina (16-12-1) plays Diamond Bar (21-8) at 7:30 p.m. In the semifinals, Marina downed top-seeded Westlake, 4-1, and Diamond Bar beat West Covina, 8-6, with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

San Luis Obispo (23-4) takes on West Covina South Hills (24-5) in the 4-A Division final at 4:30 p.m. San Luis Obispo edged Upland, 4-3, and South Hills blanked Fullerton Troy, 8-0, to reach the title game.

Two heavy-hitting teams are in the 3-A Division final at 1 p.m.--Tustin (26-3) and Whittier La Serna (27-5). In the semifinals, Tustin pounded Hesperia, 14-5, and La Serna routed Orange, 10-1.

In the 2-A Division final at 10 a.m., El Segundo (27-3) plays San Marino (22-2-1). El Segundo defeated Camino Real League rival Long Beach St. Anthony, 7-1, and San Marino beat Yucaipa, 2-1, in the semifinals.
