Check Insurance Before Yard Sale
Homeowners who are thinking about holding a spring garage sale should check with their insurance agent first, according to a consumers’ insurance-education group.
According to the Western Insurance Information Service, consumers can generally rely on their homeowners policy to provide liability coverage if the garage or yard sale is an irregular event. But homeowners who have regularly scheduled sales geared toward making a profit may need to buy insurance to cover a business pursuit.
Neighborhood yard sales involving several homeowners sometimes aren’t covered if the organizers receive a substantial amount of money from the sale, according to the service. However, if the proceeds go to a charitable organization, the event may still be covered by each individual’s insurance policy.
Consumers with questions about insurance can call the agency toll-free, (800) 397-1679.
