SOUTHERN SECTION 2-A BASEBALL : Misplayed Single Sinks Orange Lutheran, 3-2
- Share via
With two outs in the seventh inning, Orange Lutheran pitcher Kent Dowding lost his no-hitter and the game, 3-2, to host San Marino in the second round of the Southern Section 2-A baseball playoffs.
Without a hit, San Marino, the division’s second-seeded team, loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but Dowding escaped and maintained the Lancers’ 2-0 lead.
But in the bottom of the seventh, a walk to the leadoff batter and an error by third baseman Mark Carrillo put two runners on base. After a sacrifice, an RBI groundout and a walk put runners on second and third, Aaron Ukropina singled to right, scoring the tying run with San Marino’s first hit of the game. Right fielder Matt Laurent misplayed the single and the winning run scored from first base.
Dowding, who walked eight and struck out five, finished the season 10-3 for Orange Lutheran (19-7).
