HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Monroe Halts Birmingham Streak

Sean Henson scattered four singles as host Monroe High defeated Birmingham, 5-1, and snapped the Braves’ 13-game winning streak in a Mid-Valley League game Wednesday.

Chris Ascencio was two for three and John Langley tripled for Monroe (10-10, 8-9 in league play). Danny Larson had two hits for Birmingham (17-6, 12-5).

In other games:

Westlake 6, Agoura 0--Matt McHendry’s two-run single keyed a six-run sixth inning for host Westlake (25-1) in a nonleague game. McHendry was two for three.

Donnie Hill, Scott Lerner and James Clark (6-0) combined to limit Agoura (14-9) to Brian Smith’s first-inning single. Smith (4-1) suffered his first loss.

Newbury Park 10, Thousand Oaks 3--Chris Marsden and Jason Cash homered and Jon Jerotz was three for four to lead visiting Newbury Park (8-12-1, 3-9) to a Marmonte League win.

Channel Islands 5, Royal 3--George Alvarado was three for four and Richard Tepezano added two hits for visiting Channel Islands (15-12, 5-7) in a Marmonte League game.

Simi Valley 13, Camarillo 4--Tyler Nelson and Jeff Sommer each went three for four with a homer and four RBIs to lead host Simi Valley (12-12, 5-7) to a Marmonte League win.

Joe Gordon, within a home run of matching Arnold Garcia’s Southern Section record of 16, was hitless in three at-bats. Brian Vasey was three for four for Simi Valley, which will conclude its season today when it plays host to L. A. Baptist in a nonleague game.

Van Nuys 6, Reseda 0--Tony Gonzalez threw a one-hitter and Carlos Gutierrez had three hits to lead host Van Nuys (5-12) to a Mid-Valley League win. Gonzalez (2-7) allowed only Tuti Rodriguez’s first-inning infield single.

Notre Dame 17, St. Genevieve 5--Oscar Macias and Louie Tapia each had three hits to lead Notre Dame (16-10-1, 8-1), which clinched at least a tie for the San Fernando Valley League title.

La Salle 7, Harvard 1--Brian Esqueval had two hits, three RBIs, and three stolen bases to lead host La Salle (13-7, 5-4) to a San Fernando Valley League win.

North Hollywood 13, Grant 0--Erik Martinez (4-4) recorded his second one-hitter and third shutout of the season to lead host North Hollywood (9-11, 7-10) to an East Valley League win.

Nelson Pichardo was three for three with a two-run home run and four RBIs for North Hollywood. Jim Tumbeiro had the lone hit for Grant (5-18, 4-13).

Wilson 23, Verdugo Hills 0--Oscar Valenzuela tripled for Verdugo Hills (2-15, 1-8), which was limited to five hits in a Northwest Valley Conference loss.

Chaminade 8, Bell-Jeff 0--Keith Evans (3-2) struck out six, walked two and allowed three Bell-Jeff hits in a San Fernando Valley League game at Bell-Jeff.

The win was the seventh league victory in a row for Chaminade (15-8-1, 7-2). Bell-Jeff is 11-11, 5-4.
