U.S. May Join Civil Rights Suit Against Hospital

A federal judge will allow the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to join a civil rights lawsuit accusing a Pomona hospital of requiring foreign-born nurses to speak only English at work.
Under a motion granted Monday by U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie, the EEOC can conduct depositions and present witnesses in the trial involving Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.
A Filipina nurse, Adelaida Dimaranan, sued the hospital last July, claiming a de facto English-only policy prevented her and other nurses from speaking their native Tagalog on breaks. The hospital denies it has such a policy and says it encourages use of multilingual skills.
