From Times staff and Wire reports

About three dozen street gang members were arrested in a weekend crackdown that police described as a “huge success†in stemming a rising threat of violence in the city. Police said at least 37 gang members were arrested by a team of officers between 7 p.m. Friday and 11 p.m. Saturday in a sweep prompted by a rash of gang-related shootings. In contrast to the last two weeks, when two people were killed and two people--one an 8-year-old boy--were shot inside a home, no reports of gang-related violence marred the weekend, Sgt. Phil Archer said. “In terms of making sure people are safe in the city, the sweep has been a huge success,†Archer said. About 25 police officers arrested 16 adults and 21 teen-agers, most of them for parole violations, in neighborhoods that have been plagued by shootings.
