Stanford Defeats Santa Barbara
Stanford earned a shot at defending national champion UCLA by defeating UC Santa Barbara, 15-13, 8-15, 15-5, 15-4, in a first-round match of the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. tournament at Cal State Northridge.
UCLA (22-4) had a first-round bye Wednesday and will play Stanford (14-6) today at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals. It will be a rematch of last season’s title match.
Top-ranked Cal State Long Beach (25-6), champion of the WIVA’s Wilson Division, will meet USC in the other semifinal at 7:30.
The second-ranked Trojans (23-4) defeated Cal State Northridge, 12-15, 16-17, 15-8, 15-10, 17-16.
The winner of the tournament earns a bid to the Final Four.
