IRVING, Tex. — Marc Henry of Silsbee, Tex., proved himself to be the world’s strongest teen-ager Sunday when he shattered a handful of records.
Henry, who weighs 390 pounds and stands 6-foot-4, set teen-age world lifting records in the squats (832 pounds) and total (2,033).
The 18-year-old high school senior made the lifts as he breezed to the superheavyweight championship in the National High School Powerlifting Championships.
The former records of 761 in the squats and 1,973 total had been set in 1981 by George Hechter.
The 2,033-pound total not only won the national title but was the eighth-best lift in the world, regardless of age group.
Henry set national records in all four powerlifting categories--squats, bench press (501 pounds), dead lift (700 pounds) and total poundage.
