PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Tustin’s Victory Forces Showdown With No. 1 Ocean View
Tustin High School pounded Foothill, 15-4, on Saturday in the first round of the Santa Ana Elks baseball tournament to set up a showdown with top-ranked Ocean View.
The second-ranked Tillers will meet Ocean View in a second-round game at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Santa Ana High School.
Saturday, Shawn Green had three hits and scored three times. Ben Munoz added a hit and scored four times, Ben Strack had two hits and four runs batted in and Bill Courtney had two hits and five RBIs for host Tustin.
Danny Baker (8-0) allowed four hits and struck out three in four innings for the victory. Blaine Jones had two hits and an RBI for Foothill (8-5-1).
In other Santa Ana Elks tournament games:
Ocean View 11, Santa Ana Valley 1--Daniel Hernandez had four hits, including two doubles, scored twice and had two RBIs to lead Ocean View (13-2) over Santa Ana Valley (5-8) at Tustin.
Villa Park 7, Laguna Hills 2--Jason Martian had two hits, stole three bases, scored one run and had an RBI; Dan Strapp hit a three-run home run in the second inning and added an RBI double, and Mike Stevens had a hit, stole a base and scored for host Villa Park (8-5-1).
Los Alamitos 9, Mission Viejo 8--Tyler Cashman had three hits and scored twice to lead Los Alamitos at Rancho Santiago College. Mark Newman had two hits, including a two-run home run, for Mission Viejo.
Orange 5, Saddleback 1--Greg Folsom had two hits, scored a run and added an RBI, and Jesus Romo had two hits and an RBI for Orange at Rancho Santiago College.
El Toro 11, Gahr 4--Chris Sauritch had three hits, two RBIs and four stolen bases for El Toro (10-5). Ryan Filbeck (4-2) allowed four hits over six innings for the victory.
Diamond Bar 7, Irvine 4--Brian Hagerty struck out five and allowed two runs in five innings and Jeff Turley hit a two-run home run for Diamond Bar (13-2).
Pacifica 7, Santa Ana 1--Mark Flatten and Dan Meadors drove in two runs each to lead Pacifica (9-6). Tonny Ferraro (2-1) pitched a five-hitter and walked one.
In the first round of the Anaheim Lions tournament:
Garden Grove 4, Cerritos 3--Senior pitcher Shawn Zingali hit a three-run homer with two outs in the fifth inning to put Garden Grove (6-5) ahead, 4-2. Zingali (3-2) allowed four hits, struck out six and walked seven.
University 3, Troy 2--Jason Young scored what proved to be the winning run on a throwing error by Troy’s shortstop in the bottom of the sixth as University (7-7) won its sixth one-run victory of the season. Reliever Mark See (1-2) struck out three and gave up one hit in the final 2 1/3 innings for the victory.
Anaheim 10, Woodbridge 5--Danny Castro scored three runs and Ryan Jara had three RBIs to lead Anaheim (7-6-1). Castro, who had three hits, also had an RBI and Jara had a double and a triple. Sammy Serna, who had two hits for Anaheim, scored two runs and had an RBI.
Dana Hills 7, Canyon 4--Scott Holty had a two-run single in the five-run fifth inning for Dana Hills (9-6), and Mike Robertson added a two-run homer in the sixth. Robertson pitched the first three innings and then moved to center field. Dan Anderson (2-2) went the final four innings for the victory. Ryan Puskas had a solo homer in the second for Canyon.
In the Pride of the Coast tournament:
Bolsa Grande 5, Corona del Mar 1--Andy Bivens (2-4) pitched a five-hitter and struck out six as visiting Bolsa Grande (3-8-1) ended its eight-game losing streak against Corona del Mar (3-10).
