COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Davis Gives Master’s Rare Shutout

Freshman right-hander Adam Davis gave The Master’s College its first shutout in 53 games in a 3-0 victory over Biola in an NA1A District 3 game at Biola on Friday.

Davis (3-1) allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one to record The Master’s first shutout since March 18, 1989.

The Master’s (15-14, 5-6) needed Davis’ stellar performance to beat Tim Worrell (3-7), the younger brother of St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Todd Worrell.

Biola’s senior right-hander struck out 12, walked only two and allowed five hits.

The Master’s scored its first run in the top of the fifth inning. Jeff Preston led off with a double, the only extra-base hit of the game, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.

Craig Johnson was two for four with a run batted in for Master’s.

In other baseball games:

Cal Baptist 11, Cal Lutheran 7--Visiting Cal Baptist scored six runs in the final two innings to turn back Cal Lutheran, which had overcome an early four-run deficit, in an NA1A District 3 game.

Cal Lutheran trailed, 4-0, after two innings, but Dave Leonhardt began the comeback with a solo home run in the fourth.

Darnell Mitchell put Cal Lutheran (13-9, 7-5) ahead, 7-5, by hitting a three-run home run in the sixth.

However, Cal Lutheran’s Chris Matkin could not hold the lead and took the loss in relief of starter Kevin O’Neill.

Tony Jaramillo had a home run and two doubles for Cal Baptist (22-6, 8-2), which leads the district and is ranked 14th nationally.

Mission 12, L.A. City 0--Nick Lymberopoulos tossed a six-hitter, struck out 10 and walked two to record his second shutout in Southern California Athletic Conference play at East L.A. College.

Eddie Chavez was three for four with a three-run home run for Mission (17-8-1, 9-3).

Shawn Fontenot’s grand slam in the sixth keyed a six-run outburst. Fontenot finished with five runs batted in.

L.A. City is 5-7 in conference play.

SOFTBALL Moorpark 17, Valley 0--Moorpark earned its 44th consecutive Western State Conference home victory in a game that was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Freshman right-hander Robin Thomas (15-2) struck out six, and the only hit she allowed was a two-out single in the fifth inning.

Jamie Heggen and Missy Cress each had three RBIs for Moorpark (15-4, 7-0).

MEN’S TENNIS Cal Lutheran 9, Cal State Los Angeles 0--Cal Lutheran’s Tapio Rantanen won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles in a nonconference match. Cal Lutheran is 10-3.

WOMEN’S TENNIS Cal State Northridge 9, UC Riverside 0--Cal State Northridge did not lose a set in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at Riverside. CSUN is 10-8. Brenda Tilford and Heather Miller had decisive victories for CSUN at Nos. 4 and 5 singles.
