200 Students Walk Out Over Gun Case Decision
About 200 Lynwood High School students walked out for about 20 minutes Friday to protest a report that a student who had been disciplined for bringing a starter’s gun to school was being allowed to return to class. Most of the protesting students returned to school after meeting outside with Principal Mickey Cureton and some teachers.
The student, an 18-year-old senior, had been assigned to independent study at home after he brought the gun to school several weeks ago, apparently to frighten his former girlfriend, school board President Joe T. Battle said. A teacher grabbed the gun from the boy’s waistband.
Battle said the student, whose identity was not revealed, is allowed to come to school only to pick up or return homework.
