Mutual Fund Purchases Decline: Total purchases of stock and bond mutual fund shares in February totaled $11.8 billion, down from $13.7 billion in January but up from $8.1 billion in the same period last year, the Investment Company Institute said. Total purchases of stock fund shares alone were $5.9 billion in February, compared to $7 billion in January. But net stock fund purchases--subtracting sales--were up in February, to $2.5 billion from $2.4 billion in January.
