NAMES IN THE NEWS : Estefan Recovering From Injury
NEW YORK — Pop singer Gloria Estefan is “walking up and down the hallway†and making excellent progress toward a full recovery from a highway crash that broke her back, hospital officials said today.
Estefan, 32, underwent spinal surgery Thursday at the Hospital for Joint Diseases after a collision between her tour bus and a truck-trailer rig on a snowy highway in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania.
Doctors implanted steel rods in the back of her spinal cord to help straighten vertebrae knocked out of position in the crash. Hospital spokeswoman Mary Costello said Estefan was “coming along excellently.â€
Doctors planned to put a brace on her back to help it heal, Costello said.
Hospital officials said Estefan can be released as early as the weekend if her condition continues to improve.
