PREP ROUNDUP : Kimble Pitches a No-Hitter in Title Game
Jennifer Kimble pitched a no-hitter and Ocean View High School defeated Cerritos, 6-0, in the championship game of the Downey softball tournament Saturday.
Kimble, who improved her record to 5-3, had a perfect game until the seventh inning, when she walked a batter with one out. Kimble had five strikeouts. She allowed only six hits in five tournament games and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Ocean View (6-3) scored twice in the fifth and four times in the sixth.
In the Canyon tournament 4-A championship semifinal:
Canyon 5, La Habra 1--Sara Roberts (7-1) pitched a one-hitter, struck out seven, walked six and did not allow an earned run for Canyon (10-1). Roberts has not allowed an earned run in 50 innings this season. Senetha Thomas hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Stephanie Carew hit a solo homer in the third for Canyon. La Habra is 7-3.
In the 5-A fifth-place semifinal:
Marina 2, St. Joseph’s 1--Julie Muche’s fifth-inning single score winning pitcher Janet Miyahara with the deciding run. Marina is 7-4.
In the 5-A championship semifinal:
Thousand Oaks 1, Fountain Valley 0--Phronsie Franco’s fourth-inning home run was the difference. Felicia Zinner pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 for Thousand Oaks (8-3). Amy Ledbetter of Fountain Valley (5-3) pitched a six-hitter.
Mater Dei 2, Simi Valley 1 (8 innings)--Sundy Mosqueda hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning for Mater Dei (10-0). Terry Kobata pitched a three-hitter, struck out 14 and walked two.
Mater Dei 8, Righetti 2--Amy Godwin hit two home runs--one a grand slam in the top of the third and the other a solo in the second--singled and scored three times to lead Mater Dei.
In 4-A championship semifinal:
Garden Grove 1, La Mirada 0--Stephanie Smith threw a three-hitter, struck out five and walked none for Garden Grove (11-2). Shortstop Michelle Cash made several outstanding defensive plays to help Smith, who singled and scored on fielder’s choice in the first inning.
In the 4-A fifth-place semifinal:
El Toro 3, Millikan 1--El Toro scored a run the first and two in the fourth. Jennifer Jourden hit a home run for the Chargers (10-3). Millikan scored in the seventh. Marta Bickert (2-2) pitched one-hitter for the victory.
Sunny Hills 1, San Clemente 0--Kelly Ward had two hits and scored on a single by Gina Silvestri in the third inning for Sunny Hills (4-6). Wendy Moon had two hits and Tara Roush struck out 10 and allowed just three hits for San Clemente (6-5).
In the 5-A consolation semifinal:
Cypress 7, Edison 5--Cypress (9-4) had 13 hits to overcome a five-run deficit. Sarah Powers had four hits--two singles, a double and a triple--and four RBIs. Teammate Holly Pittinger had three hits, and Liz Moore added two. Beth Howard (8-2) pitched a five-hitter.
In the Estancia badminton tournament:
Buena Park and Estancia tied with 60 points each for the team championship.
In the mixed doubles finals, Hoang Ly and Cam Tu Tram of Estancia won, 15-0, 15-4. In boys’ singles, Ly of Estancia swept Ben Tang of Rosemead, 15-4, 15-0, for the championship.
In the girls’ singles championship, Noy Sundara of Buena Park defeated teammate Tam Le, 11-2, 11-8. In the boys’ doubles, John Chong and Brat Mallawong of Garden Grove defeated Adam Alitour and Jack Soong of Alhambra, 15-10, 5-15, 15-12.
